Shooting is underway in Ireland’s Fanore Beach on the psychological thriller with sci-fi undertones Woken, which is written and directed by Irish filmmaker Alan Friel who has previously authored award-winning short films such as Sophie At The Races and Cake. The movie is produced by Irish firm Fantastic Films in co-production with Marina Marzotto and Mattia Oddone’s outfit Propaganda Italia. It also enjoys support from the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Woken unfolds on a remote island in the North Sea, at the dawn of a new evolutionary phase for humankind, and it tackles the great existential question of whether men will replace God, having now destroyed nature and, as a consequence, themselves. Anna wakes up pregnant with no memory of her loving husband James, nor does she recognise Helen and Peter who are helping to get her health back on track. She soon learns that they’re on this island to escape a potential infection which has decimated Earth’s population. Unsure of anything anyone tells her, she escapes, only to discover an unbearable reality…
